AlterntiveInformant: How did you both meet and how long have you both been involved with music?

Grasscut: Good day to you sir. Andrew is an award-nominated film composer and producer; Marcus is a classically trained keyboard player and double bassist. We met in Brighton where we both reside.

AlternativeInformant: Explain your sound.

Grassscut: As well as original vocals, we feature samples recorded on mobile phones or stolen from gramophones. We use live drums, or make beats from mouse-clicks and glitches, and instruments range from the cheapest Casio keyboard to antique harmoniums.

AlternativeInformant: Who are your influences?

Grasscut: Kraftwerk, Wordsworth, Public Enemy, Robert Wyatt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, WG Sebald, Afrika Bambaata, Gavin Bryars, Devo, Blockhead, Brian Eno...

AlternativeInformant: What are your views on the music industry at the moment?

Grasscut: Seems as grotesque and beautiful as it has always been, but happily we find ourselves gathered into the bosom of the delightful Ninja Tune.

AlternativeInformant: Talk me through your debut album.

Grasscut: It’s an attempt to reflect life in contemporary England – a transcendental journey through the sublime and ridiculous.

AlternativeInformant: Do your songs have a message?

Grasscut: Most certainly: play up, play up and play the game.

AlternativeInformant: You’ve been on a number of stages, tell me which was your favourite crowd to perform to and why?

Grasscut: We’ve had some great gigs with people like Nathan Fake and at festivals including Loop and The Great Escape, but we’re really looking forward to our upcoming show with Plaid and Clark. The Big Chill too.

AlternativeInformant: How was it playing an audiovisual show at the Tate Britain?

Grasscut: Sharing a room with the paintings of JMW Turner was truly extraordinary. Obviously our visuals were better though.

AlternativeInformant: I was checking out your MySpace page and, you have a lot of influences. Who would you say influences you the most and why?

Grasscut: WG Sebald, a sadly deceased German author of compendious knowledge, who lived in Suffolk. His voices graces our debut single, High Down.

AlternativeInformant: Now, the name. How did you come up with Grasscut?

Grasscut: It represents the Englishness and the cut-up nature of our sound.

AlternativeInformant: I heard that the “Mona Lisa Curse” (scored by Andrew) won an award for Best Documentary at the Banff Film Festival. How was it to be involved with that?

Grasscut: Andrew’s been nominated for a BAFTA previously, and won other awards, but this was a very special film by director Mandy Chang – which, by the way, greatly upset Damien Hirst.

AlternativeInformant: Finally, what does the future hold for Grasscut?

Grasscut: In the short term, we have a session coming up on Xfm, gigs at Cargo, the ICA, Koko, The Big Chill, and Bloom festival. After the album is released in October, we will be heading to France, and hopefully further afield, as well as touring good ol’ blighty.

AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved with music?

Odd Nosdam: My whole life really, but I didnt start making music until 1998. for as long as I can remember, Ive collected tapes and records. and because I spent the bulk of the 90's installing big bass car stereos, myfascination with boomin systems eventually inspired me to make my own music, mostly out of boredom, but also to have some slow shit to bump in my car (which has since been permanently retired).

AlternativeInformant: Where did the name Odd Nosdam come from?

Odd Nosdam: Nosdam is my last name reversed. Odd comes from Odd Nerdrum. He's a Norwegian painter I admire: http://www.nerdrum.com/works/index.php?id=46

AlternativeInformant: You created the soundtrack for the This Is My Element film, how was that and, do you skate yourself?

Odd Nosdam: The process was challenging and at times extremely frustrating, but also fun and ultimately quite rewarding. I was paid to dig for unique records to sample from. basically, 6 months of indulging in good ol' fashioned beat making. I no longer skateboard on a regular basis, but every now and then I like to jump on a board and slappy some curbs. I was a full on Bones Brigader in the mid 80's. I got back into skating in the '90s for a minute before jacking my wrist up bad. Ivecontinued to keep up on things by watching skateboard videos.

AlternativeInformant: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?

Odd Nosdam: Visual shoegangster.

AlternativeInformant: What are your views on the music industry at the moment is it too commercialised?

Odd Nosdam: I’ve no views of any value. I couldn't care less about the music industry, or industries in general.

AlternativeInformant: Where are you from and does that give you inspiration for music?

Odd Nosdam: Sure. I lived in Cincinnati for 25 years before moving to the Bay Area. as much as I dislike the midwest, the sorta forced isolation does wonders for a developing artist.

AlternativeInformant: Who influences you and your music?

Odd Nosdam: Shit, there's a ton of inspirational people. too many to mention. My mom.

AlternativeInformant:You did a challenge for XLR8RTV and they challenged you to make an original track, using records found at a Junk shop in CA, how was that?

Odd Nosdam: All together, a pretty swell experience. any chance to collaborate with my man Jel, Im there. the XLR8R folks where super cool from the jump. they allowed Jel and I our artistic freedom. plus, the couple who own the shop are the shit and Im thrilled we can advertise their place. we kinda cleaned them out record wise though.

AlternativeInformant: How do you feel when you DJ in front of a crowd?

Odd Nosdam: Depends. Sometimes like a rock star, other times like a sucker. But it's always an awesome feeling to play what I consider great music for people, especially when it's through a big system.

AlternativeInformant: Finally, what does the future hold for Odd Nosdam? Any Shout-outs?

Odd Nosdam: Same shit. Maybe get on the road a little more often and play live. Put out more records. I plan to have my SP1200 refurbished. hello mom.

Still 'in the womb' - under nine months old, IDIGINIS have been blessed with opportunities to play Houston Reggae Festival 2008 with Sugar Minott, Freddie McGregor, Third World, Elephant Man, and more to an overwhelming response. The band has recently played dates with Groundation and Pato Banton's Mystic Roots Band. IDIGINIS were also chosen to be a part of a taping for ABC's Wifeswap in Houston after NYC casting agents found the band online through MySpace, which aired in primetime on Fri, October 31st, 2008 to 3.34 million Total Viewers (Nielsen Media Research).

IDIGINIS has been building a following fast - pumping out their mix of tuff modern roots infused with rock and hints of dub, while paying homage the classic foundation riddims of reggae music - to larger crowds show after show in their hometown of Houston. The band plans to tour extensively next year, including offers from overseas. Coming up in early 2009, shows confirmed include the Houston Reggae and Ska Festival @ Meridian in Houston, and an opening slot for Badfish (Sublime Tribute) @ the newly opened House of Blues Houston.

...THE JOURNEY HAS BEGUN ... WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF IDIGINIS.

The AlternativeInformant caught up with MIKEY DUB of IDIGINIS and asked him about the group and what we can expect in the future.

AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved with music?

Mikey Dub: All of us have been musicians in one form or another for many years, anywhere from 15-40 years since our age ranges are so varied. IDIGINIS is still a baby though for all of us together, almost at 9 months right now.

AlternativeInformant: What would you describe your music as?

Mikey Dub: Our singer Aauzraam calls our sound 'Reggae 3000', as we're taking traditional Jamaican roots reggae riddims and all infusing our own influences into the music, including rock, dub, latin and carribean fusion. I would describe our overall sound as conscious, positive, and with a strong universal message that will get people dancing and thinking at the same time.

AlternativeInformant: You played at Houston Reggae Festival 2008 with legends such as, Sugar Minott, Elephant and Third World among many other how was it playing with legends like that?

Mikey Dub: It's a blessing really. The fact that we've had great opportunities for being such a new up and coming band. The positive response we had at the Houston festival affirmed why we play this music and can play with anyone and reach out to the people. We've also recently done shows with established bands like Groundation and Dub Trio.

AlternativeInformant: Where are you all from?

Mikey Dub: What makes IDIGNIS particularly unique is the mix of people. Our singer Aauzraam and bass player Dizzy are from Texas, elder dread Lee spent a lot of time in Germany but is from the U.S., keyboard player I-Jahman is from New Orleans, Louisiana. Our drummer Bobby and I were both raised in California, though I was born in Uzbekistan, USSR.

AlternativeInformant: Does your music have a message? If so, what is that message?

Mikey Dub: The true message of our music is ONENESS - hence the logo with the pyramid and the Eye. The third eye which urges the people to wake up and step outside of themselves, unite despite race, creed, politics, etc..., and approach the world with love and consciousness, especially in the troubled times in today's society.

AlternativeInformant: Your self-titled debut album is coming out soon what can we expect?

Mikey Dub: The debut EP, simply titled IDIGINIS - showcases the diversity of the music, with each song portraying a different vibe so people can see our range of songwriting and creativity. There are many more songs written waiting to be recorded, but we thought this would be a great introduction of IDIGINIS to the world.

AlternativeInformant: What differentiates you from other bands that play a similar kind of music?

Mikey Dub: One phrase: "ORIGINAL positive roots music for the modern era". A lot of 'reggae' bands these days, including very talented ones, choose to replicate the newer-school sound of groups like Sublime. On the other hand, of the styles coming out of Jamaica today is pop oriented dance-hall, with bling, ice, 'grillz', and booty shaking just like the Top 40 rap out there to try to top the charts with their 'hot' new single that people will forget quickly. No message, no consciousness, and no authenticity. Other bands feel like they can only play reggae by doing all cover sets of Bob Marley or other mainstream artists like Shaggy or UB40, to appease the party masses who have never experienced reggae music beyond their copy of 'Legend'. They don't go beyond. We incorporate some covers to pay respects to our reggae heroes, but again, the key words are 'ORIGINAL MUSIC'.

AlternativeInformant: Where did the name Idiginis come from?

Mikey Dub: IDIGINIS is a take on Indigenous - meaning native or 'from the roots'. The (I) again, ties in with the theme of ONENESS, the eye of the world watching and waiting for people to wake up and focus on reality. In Rastafari philosophy, the common use of 'I&I' actually means 'WE' - as in a collective, eliminating the self for the greater good of all. Even we all in IDIGINIS have different spiritualities and views of the world, the foundation of the music is based on the teachings of His Imperial Majesty Haile Sellasie I, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. However, as long as we all strive to live our lives with love, compassion, and respect for one another, it doesn't matter who your idea of a Higher Power is.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that influence your sound and your music?

Mikey Dub: We all listen to so much music, and are collectors and enthusiasts. Our foundation lies in the legendary roots singers like Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, John Holt, Joe Higgs, Barrington Levy, and obviously Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley and The Original Wailers. We also enjoy the more modern roots sounds of Midnite, Gentleman, Groundation, John Brown's Body, Jah Cure, and many others. However, our individual members tastes range from hip-hop, afro-beat, ska, jazz, gospel, classic to modern rock, trip-hop and Electronica, dub & dub step, metal, hardcore, punk, etc.

AlternativeInformant: Does where you’re from influence your sound and music?

Mikey Dub: The term 'you're a product of your environment' definitely applies here. We've all seen and experienced war, crime, racism, addiction, the widening gap between the haves and have-nots, poverty, and general human struggle. The lyrics definitely reflect that, and once people really listen and read the lyrics in the CD, it will be very clear where we're coming from. We're not trying to say we're perfect or above anyone else - like any other human being, we experience impulses of jealousy, greed, negative thoughts and ego.

AlternativeInformant: What does the future hold for Idignis?

Mikey Dub: Well, with our debut EP coming up, we're going all out to use our resources and network to break out nationally and eventually internationally. Jah willing, more and more people will hear the music and continue to respond positively like they have from the very beginning. We're being offered great shows, linking u amazing people, and looking to tour very soon to share our vibes with as many people as we can.

AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved in music?

Ny: I hated school and would book myself into music courses in the Camden area. I began doing talent shows and winning them at age 13 so a long time lol.

AlternativeInformant: What inspired you to get involved with music?

Ny:It was just something inside of me that glows and always has.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that influence you and your music?

Ny: The biggest was Mariah Carey followed by Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston but my parents played a lot of music at home and so im influenced by the music i grew up to, from Simone and Garfunkel,Blondie, The police, Shangralas,Shirelles to Beres Hammond,Jah cure,Peter tosh, Burning Spear to name a few.

AlternativeInformant: For those of you that haven't heard your music, how would you describe it?

Ny: A fusion of soul,reggae and pop with elements of grime. Im an honest writer and my style has alot to do with my writing.

AlternativeInformant: Where did the name NY come from?

Ny: Ny is short for Nyomi.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that you'd like to work with in the future?

Ny: I'd love to work with Beres Hammond, Ryan Lesley,Dream,Damien Marley,The Fray Thats just a few.

AlternativeInformant: You've performed in front of large crowds before, what's the most enjoyable thing about performing in front of a large crowd?

Ny: Performing is my favourite thing as I can give my energy to my crowd and feed off thier energy. Its the best feeling in the world,the bigger the crowd the more confident I am and to me being able to captivate a live audience is a great skill in any field.

AlternativeInformant: Where are you from and does that influence your music?

Ny: Im a child of the world, from Earth (well just about) so im influenced by music from all over the world.

AlternativeInformant: Does your music have a message if so, what is that message?

Ny: Every song has a message I love to uplift and inspire but also share my experiences both positive and negative.

AlternativeInformant: What differentiates you from other Rn'B artists?

Ny: My work doesnt conform to any one genre. When you hear my voice you know it's Ny.

AlternativeInformant: I've heard that you worked with Ironik on a track called, "Stay with me" how was that?

Ny: Ironik's got a bright future and the live recording was a lot of fun, I am on other tracks on his album too.

AlternativeInformant: Finally what does the future hold for NY?

Ny: I am promoting my new track with Wookie called Falling again. I am about to do a mini US tour with The Count and Sinden. My first album is the thing to look out for!

Having played and produced together for many many years, the boys and girls of Social Audio joined forces to recently embark on a new adventure. Taking influence from a number of big live dance/electro/funk/pop bands they've created their own sound. Whilst maintaining the authentic roots vibe to the band in terms of a standard rhythm and brass section they also use modern technology to add the sequenced electro/dance element. With their cool sound and funky drops, at their gigs it’s likely to go a bit 'arms in the air'!! Fantastic live, must be seen. AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved in music?

Social Audio: If you’re talking about the band on a whole then quite a few years. The average age of the band members is around 27 and everyone in the band has been playing since they where at secondary school at least.

AlternativeInformant: How would you describe your music?

Social Audio: This is always a hard one isn’t it? Our music is definitely funky with an element of Dance and a bit electro thrown in. There are lots of different influences in our band from Groove Armada, Jamiroquai to Prince to the new Mark Ronson vibe and then there are all the timeless old school funk/soul greats such as Funkadelic and Curtis Mayfield. We all like the idea of the dance music being played by a live band and also like the rootsy funk/soul vibe. So hopefully we are somewhere in between the two.

AlternativeInformant: When did you form the group and how long have you been together?

Social Audio: The band members have been playing together for nearly 3 years now. At first it was just a lot of experimenting with different projects but 18 months ago Social Audio was born. The first few months were in practice sessions and in the studio and the last year we have been performing live around London and the South. Social Audio is all about the live show, you should come check us out man.

AlternativeInformant: Social Audio, interesting name how did you come up with that?

Social Audio: This was one of the hardest parts of putting the band together. Everyone involved has played in numerous bands in the past so everyone had different ideas of what we might be called. In the end we agreed on Social Audio which was brainstormed by Geoff and Dan after weeks of sitting in the pub discussing the matter. Basically it does what it says on the tin, we want to entertain people at social events i.e festivals and gigs and with the audio we have produced hence, SOCIAL AUDIO. (That’s what we tell people anyway, ha ha).

AlternativeInformant: Do your songs have a message? If so, what is that message?

Social Audio: Some of our songs are born from the band jamming together and others are produced in advance. The lyrical content isn’t about sending out a broad message to the masses it’s just a light hearted spin on day to day life, such as going out and getting wrecked, filthy girlfriends and dodgy relationships - inner city life.

AlternativeInformant: What’s the most enjoyable thing about performing?

Social Audio: Undoubtedly the crowd’s reaction to our music and also the buzz that is created within the band on stage. Everyone in the band knows each other really well so when we get on stage it’s a natural high. The bigger the crowd the better.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that influence you and your music?

Social Audio: Yeah loads of live dance bands old and new as mentioned before, basically if it’s up-tempo funky and it makes you want to dance we are into it. Groove Armada, Faithless, Jamiriquai, Mark Ronson, Daft Punk, Just Jack …the list goes on.

AlternativeInformant: Some of your music such as “Needin More” is mellow and chilled out. How long does it take to think of a song idea then write it and produce it usually?

Social Audio: There is no pattern to this process, some songs come together in a couple of hours where as others seem to take forever. We might start writing a song and then leave it for a few weeks and then come back to it with fresh ears. What ever works man.

AlternativeInformant: How do you feel about the music industry at this moment?

Social Audio: How long have you got? As many up and coming bands nowadays we think the industry is quite fickle, it may always have been like this but as I’m sure you know there are so many really talented bands that don’t even get a look in while the UK chart is literally rammed with tat. The Major Labels seem to cater for teenagers and from a financial point of view this is great business but musically they don’t seem to have their fingers on the pulse. At the end of the day record labels are massive money making machine and that isn’t going to change.

AlternativeInformant: Have you heard about groups such as Groove Armada signing with Bacardi instead of record labels? How do you feel about groups doing that, is that something you might do in the future?

Social Audio: Yes we think it’s a great idea for the main reason that Barcadi will get involved much more in the live side of things which is what we are all about. I think this kind of deal would benefit the artist much more. I have heard a few comments on the subject, people saying that they’re sell outs, thats b*****ks man, they’ve been around for years and years, churning out music – really good music. I think its great that they have this deal in place with Bacardi. It will benefit both the band and the fans – end of. What’s wrong with that?

AlternativeInformant: What does the future hold for Social Audio?

Social Audio: Gigs man and lots of them! Who knows what’s gonna happen in the future? We’ve all got really high expectations of our music but ultimately I think as a band you just got to gig, keep writing tunes, better tunes. Define your music. Raise the profile of our band. If you like the music your creating the chances are there will be other people who’ll agree. I think our vibe is great, you need to see us live to get the idea. I know its not exactly the world domination answer some bands would bang on about, I just think that you’ll get whats coming to you all in good time!

Croatian Rock Sensation!

The band originates from Karlovac a small town in Croatia.

From 2003, the music grows into something different, the style gets a new definition. Now its some kind of alternative electronic rock-metal that does not follow up the world metal standards a great deal.

The band has now played shows all over Croatia and are gaining a large fan base on Myspace and in Croatia.

AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved in the music industry?

Sepal: As "Sepal", the band is active since 2001. Until now we published three demo ep-s so we cannot say that we are very involved in the music industry, for now. We hope soon to find a record company willing to give us a chance to publish our first album and open some new possibilities to help us be more succesful in our home, and of course, the international market.

AlternativeInformant: When did you all meet and form Sepal?

Sepal: Here is how it all started: nine years ago Valentin Mrak(vocal, ex. guitar) and Alen Muža (drums), in their elementary school days, formed a punk band just to have fun but a year after Damir Vučković (bass), Mrak's highschool friend joins them. For some time, the band played cover songs and little by little started making their own songs that led it more into serious music playing, thus impliying the need for more band members. In a local night club, we met Marko Turkalj(guitar) who showed a desire to come and listen us practice. Since he showed he can play the guitar quite good and was very interested, he became a part of Sepal. Josip Vučer (ex. vocal) joined the band soon after, but after the first ep and video was recorded, he left the band becouse of private obligations. Mrak takes over the vocals and leaves the guitar role entirely to Marko. As we wanted our music to be a little bit different from others, we decided to introduce some electronics into it. For that we needed one more person. Then, Marko's brother Luka Turkalj (electronics) came involved in the whole story and that mostly affected the style of music Sepal creates.

AlternativeInformant: What genre of music would you describe yours as?

Sepal: We would describe our style as modern rock metal influenced a lot by electronics. We try to make our songs be as much hard and as much melodic at the same time and to involve as much electronic elements as possible. The goal is to make our music interesting and enjoyable to listen. So far were quite good at it.

AlternativeInformant: What differentiates you from other Rock/Electronica groups?

Sepal: What makes us different is our ideas and the way we manage to pack it all up in a good piece of music. Innovative guitars and samples with sometimes odd but recognizable vocals make us special. We try very hard to make our music original which as a consequence brings some good and some bad things. The good ones are that people tend to remember us very fast and mostly like something fresh and new, but the bad thing is that same originality makes it sometimes hard for us to get shows in Croatian festivals. For some rock festivals we are too hard, and for some hardcore metal fests we are too mild. We hope that will soon change and we get more lucky when it comes to things like that.

AlternativeInformant: Does your music have a message?

Sepal: Yes, it has a message! No matter how difficult moments you might have, no matter if they come from within you or from the outside world, you should go on and never stop. Using our music and lyrics, we try to help people get in a good mood, and kick in some adrenaline while we're at it. There is nothing wrong in getting a little crazy and have a good f**king time. One should not burden himself with history, but with the things that are happening right now and we try to make the listener think of the future and to make use of every moment of his life!

AlternativeInformant: Is there a large demand for your type of music in

Croatia

?

Sepal: The condition in Croatia is very bad when it comes to any sort of alternative music. But lately it seems to be moving foward a bit, using baby steps though, but foward none-the-less. The biggest problem is the lack of places where bands could play and practice and people here are quite not interested in alternative music. It will surely take some more time for the alternative culture in our country to stabilize and get support from the government and for the people to realize that no matter how different, hard or wierd this kind of music can be, its still music like every other.

AlternativeInformant: What does the name Sepal mean and how was the name thought of?

Sepal: Lol, this is a really funny part. We made the name up by taking a croatian-english dictionary and started searching for words that would sound good for a band name. Out of a few candidates, "Sepal" sounded best. So we ended up naming our band by a part of a flower, so we decided to use a rose as a main motive for our new demo cover, and putting that rose in midst of electrical instalations and space where nothing living would ever remain alive. The public seemed to like the name so we decided to keep it. Its short, easy to remember, has a cool meaning, and the whole bend can see itself in the name- as the sepals give support to flowers, we give support to the rock metal scene using our songs, playing, and spending time with our friends and fans.

AlternativeInformant: What do you feel the most enjoyable thing about performing is?

MRAK: when on stage, I feel somewhat untouchable because of the words I sing. Because then I sing about things I cant express by conversation, but I sure can express them through our songs! Then I feel very powerful and good... unless I smoke a lot of cigarettes, then I get a headache! :)

ALEN: The energy I feel when performing, generally the fun and enjoyment the music and live playing brings. One must try it in order to realise what I mean. Oh yeah, and beating the sh*t out of my drumset! :)

DAMIR: The adrenaline I get when on stage is my favorite thing. I think we play very good so im happy that other people can hear it aswell. Another thing is the traveling into other cities and meeting alot of cool people.

MARKO: I enjoy spending time by working on our songs in the studio but of course, I love sharing the result of our hard work with others. Its a great feeling when people accept our songs and when we all together make a hell of a party! I try to give it all I got, have a good time, meet new people and enjoy playing my guitar!

LUKA: One of the best feelings I get is a combination of stage fright and the excitement before we start the show. I enjoy crating the music as much as playing it. I like to see smiles on people's faces after a good played gig. Thats a sign that tells me our aour hard work was worth it!

AlternativeInformant: Finally, what does the future hold for Sepal?

Sepal: Hopefully a contract with some record labels, a lot of touring and playing, and being able to earn something for start, writing interesting music, partying... and beer.

Dread Daze: Peace o all the good folks. My love of music came from my mother and family. There were always all types of music playing in our house and some of my family members are musicians.

Dread Daze: I was called Daze in then my music mentor George Grant introduced me to George Clinton from parliament and he said" hey George meet Dread Daze" and from there it felt and sounded cool.

Dread Daze: Yes yes our music does not preach but observe the world and people.

AlternativeInformant: What do you think about the music industry in general at the moment and the impact it has on artist's music?

Dread Daze: To be honest we are in a state of good music worldwide more musicians are doing a lot more to get heard on the indie level and we are with that the majors god help them. What we don’t like is the corporate machine that makes a mockery out of music.

AlternativeInformant: "MURDER IN THE NAME OF RELIGION" is a powerful song, where did the inspiration for making a song like that come from?

Dread Daze: Thank you very much for that. The climate of the world we live in so much fighting for no reason the world is in pain and needs healing.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that influence you?

Dread Daze: Yes many known and unknown I get vibes from all things and all inspires our works. From Bob Marley to Nat king Cole.

AlternativeInformant: What does the future hold for Dread Daze?

There's rock and then there's Modern Legion: the new, young Australian rock band set to take the world by storm.

Formed in the summer of 2007 from the ashes of some notable local bands, the band - Steph Collis (vocals), Matt Wilkinson (guitar), Adrian Santospirito (guitar), Baz Brauer (bass, Dave Szental (drums) - have just come back from the States where they recorded their highly-anticipated debut album. The flagship release for the brand-new ManaSonic Music label, it was produced by Grammy-winning producer Scott Mathews (David Bowie, Beach Boys, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger) and features special guests ranging from Huey Lewis of '& the news' fame, Van Dyke Parks (Brian Wilson, Bruce Springsteen, Byrds, Silverchair & Randy Newman) to a California beauty queen.

Though none of Modern Legion is older than 23, all are veterans on the Australian rock circuit. Steph and Barry's Geelong band The Whiteroom, signed to Roadrunner at age 16, had a hit with the song "Enemies Closer" in 2006 and toured arenas with Nickelback; Matt Wilkinson and Adrian Santospirito's Geelong band The Jades made the acclaimed EP "New Wave Chocolate" that garnered extensive radio play in the UK aand Australia. AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved in the music industry?

The Modern Legion: We've all been in bands since we were around 13 years old, so around ten years, and the last 6 or so being semi professional... not just kids jamming in a garage :) Steph (vox) and Baz (bass) we're in an Australian band called the Whiteroom signed to roadrunner records & toured Australia extensively with the likes of Nickelback in oz's biggest venues & arenas.... and Adrian (keys) & myself (guitar/vox) were in 'The Jades' with a successful single/ep release here in oz & a tour of the UK under the belt. So there's a fair bit of experience in the group.

AlternativeInformant: How would you describe the sound of the group and the genre of music you produce?

The Modern Legion: Well... if I had to try and describe it, I’d say... imagine you were listening to Fleetwood Mac’s 'rumours' then you were kicked in the ear by an Atari & pummelled by his orchestra pals! But its indie rock with some kick 70's overtones, some great softer tunes with a nice mix of good old face melting rock n roll tracks.

AlternativeInformant: What differentiates you from other groups that produce the same or similar sounding music?

The Modern Legion: The male/female voice combo. I do a lot of singing with steph on nearly every tune, and the harmony work is very prominent. So straight away that gives us an edge. There aren’t a lot of bands out there with a female vocalist pulling the kind of sound we have. Plus we built our keyboard player out of matchsticks.... so that differentiates us a tad!

AlternativeInformant: Does your music have a message?

The Modern Legion: It’s not really preachy music or anything like that, it’s more personal. We write about ourselves and our experiences in life in a way that allows the listener to take from it whatever he or she wants to. We love wordplay, so we don’t have a lot of 'you' 'me' 'he' 'she' one dimensional lyrics... they are more objective allowing anybody reading them or listening to them to apply them to their own situation. Whatever it may be.

If you play the record in reverse it has a hidden message for building a keyboard player... but that's about it.

AlternativeInformant: What are the most enjoyable things about performing?

Matt: That minute or so just before you hit the stage & you can feel the rush hit you like a bus. Nothing beats belting out your tunes live and seeing how they effect the people right in front of you. Recording is great fun & and you can achieve so much... but being able to pull it off live & entertaining... that's where it's at.

Steph: It’s the atmosphere. The adrenaline you get on stage, the people you meet at the shows, the bands you become friends with on the road, the feeling you get when you see a member of the crowd reacting to your music. The best part is though, when you finish the last song and you get an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. It’s a totally different world from writing and recording your songs, it’s a chance to give life to them.

Baz: Seeing all the hard work pay off, you practice your ass off and live very poor (financially) for a long time, just great to see the smiles on people’s faces when it all comes together.

Dave: I get to hit drums while drinking beer and looking at pretty girls. That's a combination of the 3 greatest things in the world. Plus from the drums I get to look at Matt's ass.

Adrian: The excitement and buzz you get from playing a killer show in front an audience that appreciates it. The energy that you and the crowd both create together is a feeling that only a musician will ever understand. It certainly is a priceless moment.

AlternativeInformant: How did the name Rebel come about and how did it change to The Modern Legion?

The Modern Legion: Rebel was the name we started out with, we took it from the Bowie tune rebel rebel, but as it turned out there was not a lot of people putting two & two together and getting the reference. There is also a large chain of sports stores called 'rebel' so to avoid any future troubles we decided to change the name. The Modern Legion came about after I was watching a doco' on the French foreign legion... I was really digging it & just remember thinking that a word play on that would be kind of cool. And so I came up with 'The Modern Legion' it also opens itself up to a lot more artistically & everyone seemed to love it, so it stuck.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists or groups that influence your music?

The Modern Legion: So many. We are all big Beatle fans & have been, as most people' since we were all kids. I think this is where our strong use of harmony was derived from. Also bands like Muse, Fleetwood Mac, Nick Drake, The Durocs, Sleepy Jackson, Van Halen, George Harrison & Huey Lewis & the news.... which was crazy because we actually were lucky enough to have Huey Lewis come in to the studio while we were recording the album in San Francisco & do a little bit of vocal work for our record. Being a big fan it was great to meet him, he was terrific guy & funny as hell! Other bands like Silverchair here in

Australia

were a band we always admired & influenced us greatly. So the range is vast, but all contributed greatly to Steph & my writing.

AlternativeInformant: What have been your favourite tracks to make and why?

Matt: My favourite tracks to work on were tunes called 'In Fashion' & 'Into the Sun'. In Fashion because it was the first time I’d been able to use/hear live strings & brass in the studio... and arranging string lines with our producer Scott Mathews was an amazing experience & the end result speaks for itself. 'Into the Sun' was also mind blowing in that we got to work with none other than Mr Van Dyke Parks. (beach boys, the byrds, silverchair) He arranged an amazing accordion part over this, one of our softer songs & was amazing to work with... his parts along with a guest appearance on the Uke by renound rock journalist Sylvie Simmons (mojo, rolling stone fame) helped to make the song sound as beautiful as it does.

Steph: Their weren’t any specific tracks that were more enjoyable to record, but there were parts that we all had fun doing. Like the tracks when we were all in the room clapping, or yelling, or hitting biscuit tins. I’m sure if you soloed these tracks and turned them up you could hear us laughing.

Baz: I had a great time recording 'into the sun', my first time playing an upright double bass, and all the songs on the album that I used a 1963 hoffner bass on. Also 'its now' was a great experience because of the pace and intensity of the song. Had to have our weeties that morning!!

Dave: Fading Away. This song has great groove and a soulful vibe.

Adrian: My favourite track to work on would defiantly have to be December Morning as I got the chance to play a Steinway grand piano which made me warm and fuzzy inside.

Agillaz Lurk: Producing Irie beats!

Agillaz has been putting it down for a while. He started getting into music in the middle of the 90`s but 2001-2002 building his own studio to make music and have since then developed his mastering skills in beats.
His music is known for always touching the listeners with feelin, different sounds and special vibe. Born and raised in a small town called Uddevalla (Db),but moved to Gothenburg in September 2003. His parents are from

Agillaz: I’ve been signed to my label for like 9 months now.

Agillaz: I don’t like to put my music in a category, but it sounds like hip hop reggae.

Agillaz: Tupac Shakur, Bob Marley are more than influences to me. I love J Dilla, Dr.Dre, but I get influences from people like Malcolm X, Martin Luther king and of course Jah!

Agillaz: I would love to work with the Marley Brothers, Dead Prez, Outlawz revolutionary people.

AlternativeInformant: What artists have you worked with so far?

Agillaz: I’ve worked with : Divine Allah, RAW, African Souljah, Keiran Anthony, Napz Meka, Yani**a, Jah Defender, to name a few but I got some big names comin’ this year, so just wait and you will see jah knows.

AlternativeInformant: How did you start creating beats?

Agillaz: I was just playing around & I used to rap back then so I needed beats and to get 'em was to create 'em myself..and one that way it is.

AlternativeInformant: How do you get inspiration for making and producing beats?

Agillaz: It’s Jah work, I love doin’ music so it’s all come natural. Give Thanks.

AlternativeInformant: Do you think producing beats has becoming easier in recent years and if so why?

Agillaz: Hmm, not easier but people can just do a beat in their computer today, but it’s all about what’s from your heart & soul so it takes a lot more than that to come up with some real good music.

AlternativeInformant: The beats you produce are quite complex on average how long does it take for you to make a beat?

Agillaz: It’s different all times, I can get an idea in 10 minutes but the beat ain’t done until it’s mixed arranged etc so a couple of more hours.

AlternativeInformant: What has been your favourite beat to produce?

Agillaz: Hard to say, but I got my favorites "The March The Welcome" "Im Not A Slave" & "Get That Guap."

AlternativeInformant: How did your name come about?

Agillaz: I got it from my real name Adam Gil Lazaro, I wanted a name that’s was just me.

Oojami: Fusion at its best!

Over the last 6 years Oojami has produced 3 albums (internationally released on Miles Copland's (ex-manager of Sting and the Police) label), played hundreds of gigs in over 15 countries, including a tour of the US/Canada, and featured on more than 30 compilations around the world.

In its live incarnation Oojami combines belly dancers with mesmerising Sufi dancing, providing a vivid musical experience for the eyes. Therefore it is no wonder that the band is building up a strong fan base of open-minded music fans eager to appreciate new and exciting global sounds.

AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved with music?

Oojami: 15 years

AlternativeInformant: How would you describe you genre of music?

Oojami: Global Roots!

AlternativeInformant: What do you think differentiates about you and other groups who are in the same genre of music as you?

Oojami: We always aim to be a more song based band than a project based i.e. Bhangra, Sufi beats, Balkan beats, Belly Dancing Beats etc. Songs stay but project goes out with fashion and bands disappear after lots of hype created around them!

AlternativeInformant: What do you find the most enjoyable thing about performing?

Oojami: To connect to the other people emotionally and share your ideas musically and philosophically. Make sure that you are not alone and isolated in the society! Put a smiles on other people's face. Make an enjoyable leaving, meeting with other people, seeing other places and having a fun!

AlternativeInformant: Does your music have a message?

Oojami: Yes, it is a conscious partying! We aim to turn some ethnic sounds to protest music. Like Bob Marley did with Reggae. He turned the beach music to an international protest music.

AlternativeInformant: How do you feel about the music industry as a whole at this moment?

Oojami: Music market is becoming less artist based and more project based from Girls/Boy bands to other fabricated middle class rock band etc. Same goes for the so called world music as well. Artist needs long term investment but everyone wants quick return, maximum profit with minimum investment. Cover bands, Compilations make money for record labels and venues but kills the artist and creativity. Fast food and fast music consumption! Format is more important then content to sell. In the past, 50% was show business other 50% was about writing good songs and creativity. Now days, 90% is show business and 10% is about creativity, being original and taking risk to create something new!

AlternativeInformant: There’s a lot of energy during one of your shows, any preparation needed beforehand?

Oojami: Having and keeping a regular band is a very expensive and time consuming business particularly when there is no more label support and income from record sells. At the ground level there is no artist support from organisations that they are supposed to support artists. They are all manipulated by organisations that exploit artists. All help goes to promoters and agencies rather then artists! To keep the energy we got is not easy all the time. We end up doing gigs that they are not musically necessary but keeps us going on economically even though the band get exosted and end up doing some below the average gigs to damage our reputation! I always aimed to work with nice people even they are musically not as good as others because I believe to have the energy on the stage and enjoy being on the stage with other band members is more important. 50% of the good performance is to do what happens at the back stage!

AlternativeInformant: Where are you all from originally?

Oojami: We are a truly global band. We got Turkish, Spanish, Bengali, Caribbean, Egyptian and English origin people in the band.

AlternativeInformant: How did the name Oojami come about?

Oojami: Made up in a way that people in the West thinks it is Turkish and people in Turkey thinks it is English! We want to create something that doesn’t have a meaning in a particular culture and looks good as a logo!

AlternativeInformant: What does the future hold for Oojami?

Oojami: We are writing a new album and aiming to breakout in to the main stream market without loosing our roots. We want to make an international hit with an edge and attitude without compromising our direction but take it to the next level with better songs then we have produced before. Upwards and forwards we don't feel like we have started yet!

The Thirst are an electrifying indie/rock band from Brixton who are emerging as one of the premiere live acts in the

. Consisting of brothers Mensah (lead guitar) and Kwame (bass), alongside school friends Mark (rhythm guitarist) and Marcus (drummer), The Thirst blend together a vibrant sound and offer a refreshing and uplifting alternative to present youth culture. Inspired and influenced by old punk records, Hendrix, drum n’ bass and hip-hop, the result is uniquely their own.

From the first band rehearsals at Mensah and Kwame’s house to playing at local venues, The Thirst built up their strong fan-base the traditional way, gigging across London up to six times a week. Word soon spread of their talent and it wasn’t long before Ronnie Wood heard of The Thirst making waves in London.

The Rolling Stone immediately sent his talent scouts down to one of their gigs. The Thirst blew the crowd away and as soon as Ronnie returned from tour, he along with his family went to see the band at their gig at The Half Moon in Putney. The Thirst was signed on the spot, making them the first band to be signed to Wooden Records.

“These guys clearly belong on stage; they have a serious sound, raw talent and don’t disregard the power of lyrics like so many bands do these days.”(Ronnie Wood).

“I started playing now and again and got these three round just smoking and trying to stay off the road. My mum allowed us all to come round her house, have a jam, socialise and chill out. She’d rather that than us hanging on the corner smoking weed." (Mensah)

Since being signed, The Thirst released a limited copy of a 4 track EP which sold out within two weeks of release. The lead single, ‘My Everything’, was championed by Zane Lowe on his Radio 1 show and the video for ‘My Everything’ can also be seen on MTV2 Indie Mixtape. The Thirst followed up the success of their debut EP by releasing a vibrant club single entitled Ready 2 Move; this download release received rave reviews from specialist press. The video for Ready 2 Move really captured the bands exhilarating live performances and can be seen in full rotation on Q Channel, Sub TV, MTV2 Indie-Mixtape and many more.

The summer of 2007 witnessed The Thirst gracing the main stage at a number of prestigious

festivals; their debut appearance being none other than the infamous Isle of Wight Festival, which was filmed and televised by Channel 4. The Thirst also played Hyde Park Calling, Electric Gardens, and Glastonbury (Left-field) in addition to an unforgetable support show for the Rolling Stones in front of 40,000 people in Budva, Croatia.

rockers, The Checks. The Thirst also performed at two Sex Pistols support slots where they truly held their own up against a very intimidating crowd at a sold out Manchester Arena!

The Thirst have been creating a real “scene buzz” and regularly hold their own "Thirsty" parties in and around London including a recent launch party at The Brixton Fridge, where they played a sold out show with support from Indie favourites Good-Books. The show was attended by one of their biggest inspirations Pete Doherty, which has led to recent studio sessions and secret jams at his house. It has now been confirmed The Thirst will feature on Pete's solo album due out later this year.
Now, The Thirst is gearing up to record their eagerly anticipated Album at London’s Olympic studios with an excellent set of producers including... Jake Fior (Babyshambles, The Libertines). AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved in the music industry?

The Thirst: We have been a band for almost 3 years now, gigging for 2 years and industry (signed to an independent label) for a year!
AlternativeInformant: What would you describe your genre of music as?

AlternativeInformant: When and how did you all meet and form the phenomenon that is The Thirst?

The Thirst: Cheers Phenomenon, reminds me of that Philadelphia cheese advert - lol, Well we met at home (brothers Kwame & Mensah)Mark & Marcus attended same primary school and secondary school, but it wasn't until leaving school we all met up in Mordon quite randomly doing graffiti!!. Mensah was playing guitar and persuaded the others to invest in a piece of equipment.. we all went cash converters...then had a jamm.. a jamm turned into renting a rehearsal space (via our Manager and brother from another mother..Kingsley) which followed 6 months of intense rehearsals .. which lead to shows.. which lead to this interview.. where we are again-lol.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that influence your music?

The Thirst: There are a wide range of artists with all have a very diverse taste in music including speed bhangra! influences ranging from Hendrix Experience to Snoop Dogg... doggy style album.We listen to everything.... right now we are in the 80's listening to C.R.E.A.M, tomorrow we could be in the 90's with BLUR, THEN FIRDAY WE COULD BE IN 2010 WITH FUTURE SAILOR.

AlternativeInformant: Is there a message to your music? If so what’s the message?

The Thirst: Read between the lines.

AlternativeInformant: What do you find the most enjoyable thing about performing or recording your music?

The Thirst: That someone will listen to it- This is a passion for us we have not started a band as its cool or mummy and daddy brought us a drum-kit and guitars , we love music and we love performing live its our drug, there is no bigger buzz so when we see someone has attended a gig to see us that's satisfaction , in its purest!

AlternativeInformant: What is your current view of new indie acts out there at the moment?

The Thirst: Its comme ci comme ca, Those that are new and trying something new we respect, those that are new and are ripping off yesterday's new we don't.. we are listening and you know who you are!

AlternativeInformant: Why do you think that people are hooked on your sound?

The Thirst: Cheers..But are they?? Sign us up for rehab then!

AlternativeInformant: What do you think about Myspace where artists like yourself can promote your music easily and gain an audience?

The Thirst: WE LOVE MYSPACE, Its great bring on myspace records... where do we sign lol, Nah its a fantastic tool if used right, stop spamming and stop cheating your plays. Well done Tom, We wont forget you if we make it.

The Thirst: Kwame-Deciding what T-shirt to wear.

Blue King Brown Urban Roots at its best!

BKB backed up their first EP release with a tough debut album titled ‘STAND UP’, independently released in October 2006 through their own label, ROOTS LEVEL RECORDS and in

Japan

through VILLAGE AGAIN/SIDEOUT. The album has received mass critical acclaim with ‘come and check your head’, the first single off the album hitting hard!

Dedicated to the movement, Hard hitting lyrics and groove, socially aware and active, Blue King Brown is a band that walks their talk on many social issues and are known for actively speaking out.

Natalie Paapaa answered the questions on behalf of the whole band.

AlternativeInformant: How long have you been involved in the music industry?

Blue King Brown: Since the release of our first e.p which was in 2005. So 3 years ish.

AlternativeInformant: What would you describe your genre of music as?

Blue King Brown: Urban Roots

AlternativeInformant: When and how did you all meet and create Blue King Brown?

Blue King Brown: Carlo (bass player/ manager/ co-founder and writer) and I met and began to play percussion together. We toured a lot around the world as percussionists and street performers. We had always imagined starting a band with melody and vocals, as we both had been guitarists before we picked up percussion. We moved to Melbourne where we scouted out some hip musicians and started up Blue King Brown.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists that influence your music?

Blue King Brown: Definitely, there always is...from Fela Kuti, Cheik Lo, Ernest Ranglin, Bob, Stephen and Damian Marley, to Led Zeppelin, Santana, Aretha, Hendrix, Joplin, Jah Mason, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles..and countless others.

AlternativeInformant: Are there any artists or groups that you aspire to be like?

Blue King Brown: I think one of the defining things about Blue King Brown is our sound. Our mix of heavy percussive grooves with melodic riffs and message based lyrics. In this sense we are striving to be original, but still true to the music and sounds we love.

AlternativeInformant: Is there a large fan-base for your type of music in

grows every year, and the spread of its music is reaching more and more people and crossing over more genres. So yes there is definitely an already big fan base for our style of music in Oz and we look forward to seeing more roots and conscious artists emerge in the years to come.

AlternativeInformant: Your song “Come and check yourself” is an amazing mix of talent, soul and rhythm does this song have a message?

Blue King Brown: Yes this song was written around a time in recent Australian history when our government undertook a huge armed forces recruitment drive. this was approximately 2 years after our government had whole heartedly threw its citizens into the fire of the “war on terror”, to which many, many thousands of Australians were and still are opposed to.
I found it appalling that our government would target young adults and try to convince them that going to war for their country was a just and heroic path to choose. Well I disagree with that level of thinking and aim to inspire my generation to truly think about what it is they’d really be fighting for, to think with an open mind and with the strength to see the truth for what it is and be mindful of the future they choose for themselves and their communities.

AlternativeInformant: What do you hope to do with your music? Do you want to spread a message, start a movement?

Blue King Brown: We hope to help inspire people to take up their individual responsibility to making positive change on our earth.
The world has gone through some very tough and eye opening times recently, and the global community are more than ever seeking peaceful resolutions instead of conflict. Those of us who are lucky enough to live in countries where we don’t worry about whether or not our homes will be bombed at any moment, are starting to use our privileges to help sustain and expand NGO’s and groups who are on the ground in many areas where war is a daily reality.
There is a shift in the consciousness across the world, which we notice everywhere we go. I’m not saying there’s not a long way to go before we can see a true unity between all nations for peace, but this movement has already begun, and we are at a defining point in its journey forward. It is in our hands and we are more and more aware of that, especially with the climate crisis finally reaching main stream media and proving that people are good and willing to make personal changes when they’re given the whole truth of any situation. And those who refuse to move on these issues and see the light, are usually those with something to gain from the ongoing destruction of the earth. and quite often leaders, politicians and corporate big wigs of the western world. We like to remind people that they are not alone in their struggle for a better world. That we and many others are here standing up against the injustices of today, with them.

AlternativeInformant: What do you find the most enjoyable thing about recording your music or doing shows?

Blue King Brown: We are a live show type of band. We love to play live whether it’s at our own shows or festivals. Personally I really enjoy the energy exchange between crowd and band in a live situation. In the studio we get to put down all the ideas and instruments that we’ve wanted to hear on our tracks but haven’t been able to afford the 20 piece touring band.

AlternativeInformant: Do you think that there should be more artists out there who should be spreading a message with their music rather than just using it to make money?

Blue King Brown: I think that artists should be artists and stay true to whatever it is that inspires and drives them to create, whether that includes a message or not.

AlternativeInformant: What does the future hold for Blue King Brown?

Blue King Brown: We are currently working our asses off on a new album, which is exciting. We are touring in

over the next 2 months then hitting the studio to get down to business. And after that, more touring and expanding our reach across the globe..!!
